Living to Dreamby Matthew Coit
It’s early June and all is right.
The scent of cherry blossoms in full bloom
is drifting through the air while
the breeze pulls the petals into a fluid dance with the sunlight,
weaving their way through the world with joy.
-
It nearly feels as if I am there.
-
To my left, an angel lays her head on my shoulder,
long black hair drifting in the breeze and tickling my throat,
each strand of silk catching the light perfectly.
A sleepy smile plays on her lips,
as she squeezes my arm with her soft hand
and nestles closer.
Her bronze skin seems to glow in the setting sun,
and I can’t keep from admiring her.
As if on cue she lifts her face to mine,
emerald eyes fluttering open
and smiles. An adoring smile she always saved
just for me.
-
Behind closed eyes my heart is breaking.
-
The sun is falling beyond the trees,
and a piece of me must leave.
Arms spread wide with the wings of the world,
she calls for one more embrace before we part,
giggling as I hold her tight and spin her around,
dancing one last time with the petals.
If I had known it was the last time…
how could I have known it was the last time?
-
A single tear falls from my face.
-
She walks away, and I watch her go
into the last sunset,
from the last embrace,
and the last day
of our life…
-
I clench my eyes tighter, grasping at the fading dream,
but it is already gone, and the pain of reality sets in.
The world that I live in is no longer hers,
and I won’t be with her again for some time.
-
One day I pray, that I will hold her in my arms once more.
-
It’s early June and all is right…

Return to Eden by Matthew Coit
His memories were a prison that trapped him inside,
This lonely man of seventy three.
They left him a broken shell of what was,
Showing the wife whom death made leave.
-
Driven by the longing to see her once more,
He ventured out into the night.
Out to the garden behind their old cottage,
Where he had not been since she passed.
-
With a rusty groan the gate rasped open,
Like two soldiers stepping aside.
To give way to the garden that she had looked after,
And poured herself for a lifetime.
-
Long tendrils of vines played like snakes in the moonlight,
Slithering up the garden’s high walls.
Surrounding the lattice of fruit trees and flowers,
And the rosebushes long left alone.
-
The earth had reclaimed what had once been its own,
Covering the walks with thick spongy moss.
Yet with every step that he took down the path,
He felt more and more at home.
-
It was then through the archway in the center he saw her,
In the beauty of her youth so pristine.
Cast with an aura so soft and adoring,
With a smile he hadn’t seen in so long.
-
She held out her hand, beckoning to him,
As he took a step towards her arms.
Letting the rose fragrance carry him forward,
Knowing forever was a short way off.
-
He knelt in the lichen at whole by her side,
As he breathed his last breath in this world.
He closed his eyes a smile playing on his lips,
For his prison no longer had bars.
